Ron Haque Sikder, managing director of Sikder Group and a former director of National Bank, has died in Dubai while undergoing treatment.
A relative of Ron, seeking anonymity, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
He passed away in the early hours today (4 May) in the United Arab Emirates.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, Ron had been living with his family in Thailand and Dubai.
In 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed cases against 13 individuals, including Ron and his brother Rick Haque Sikder, on charges of money laundering and corruption. After completing its investigation, the ACC submitted separate charge sheets in two cases.
The ACC investigation found that Ron and Rick spent foreign currency beyond the permitted limits using various credit cards between 2017 and 2021, despite not having sufficient funds in their foreign currency (FC) accounts. This was done in violation of Bangladesh Bank regulations and circulars.
According to the case documents, Ron illegally spent $6,092,225 (approximately Tk50 crore) abroad, while Rick spent $2,622,499 (around Tk21 crore). It is further alleged that efforts were later made to legitimise these funds through money laundering.
