Dhaka University teacher Sudip Chakraborty has been placed on a three-day remand in a case filed over the suicide of student Munira Mahjabin Mimo.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monjurul Islam passed the order today (3 May), state counsel Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed.
Earlier, on Wednesday (29 April), the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a three-day remand. The court later fixed today for the hearing.
According to the remand application, Sudip Chakraborty had a relationship with the victim. Prior to the incident on 26 April, the two had a video call conversation, during which the victim was allegedly provoked to take her own life. Police said remand was necessary to verify information obtained during initial interrogation and to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
During the hearing, the state counsel said the victim’s father filed the case after reviewing chat records following the incident. He told the court that the nature of the relationship between the accused and the student was becoming clearer through the investigation and sought remand in the interest of uncovering the facts.
Defence lawyer Abu Sayem opposed the remand, questioning the basis of the police application. He argued that digital evidence could be manipulated and referred to an audio recording involving the victim’s family, which was submitted to the court on a pen drive.
Other defence lawyers claimed that the victim had previous personal relationships and mental health issues, citing an audio conversation as part of their argument. They requested that the accused be questioned without being taken into remand.
After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.
On 26 April, police recovered the body of Munira Mahjabin Mimo from her residence in North Badda.
According to police, a note recovered from the scene mentioned the accused by name and referred to money and personal items.
A case was later filed accusing Sudip of abetting the suicide. He was subsequently arrested, and the court rejected his bail and ordered him to be sent to jail.
