At least eight people, including two women, were killed and several others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a pickup van in the Telibazar Bridge area of South Surma in Sylhet this morning (3 May).
The accident occurred at around 6:30am on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
According to local sources, the victims were a group of workers travelling from Sylhet to Sunamganj in a pickup van. The vehicle collided with a timber-laden truck coming from the opposite direction.
Md Monjurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, confirmed that four people died on the spot.
Of those rushed to hospitals, three passed away at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, while another succumbed to injuries at Sylhet Women’s Medical College, he confirmed.
The police official stated that several others sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Police are currently working to confirm the identities of the deceased.
