Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested two individuals in the capital’s Demra area for attempting to carry out a robbery while wearing law enforcers’ uniforms.
The arrestees – Md Alamin, alias “Mota Alamin,” and Md Raihan – are active members of an organised robbery gang, said Wing Commander MZM Entekhab Chowdhury, director of the force’s legal and media wing, during a briefing today (2 May) at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar.
Wing Commander Entekhab said Alamin was first arrested during an operation in the Aman Market area of Mendipur under Demra Police Station. Based on information obtained from him, RAB later arrested his associate Raihan from the Haji CNG pump area, around 800 metres from Mendipur Bazar.
During the operation, RAB recovered one foreign-made pistol, one magazine, four rounds of ammunition, a microbus, two fake vehicle number plates, six RAB vests, two handcuffs, one walkie-talkie, a sticker labelled “Police,” a laser light device, two police batons, a pocket Wi-Fi router, an army-style mask, and two smartphones.
According to RAB, the arrested individuals are members of an organised gang that had long been involved in robbing passenger buses and microbuses in different parts of Bangladesh.
They would pose as RAB personnel and other law enforcers to threaten drivers and passengers at gunpoint, and loot valuables before fleeing.
The gang, led by Alamin, sometimes used vehicles bearing police tags and at other times, carried out robberies under the guise of joint operations, wearing army-style masks.
RAB said Alamin was previously involved in brick, sand, and poultry businesses, which are now inactive. Raihan, on the other hand, worked as a driver and played a key role in supplying vehicles such as mini-trucks and microbuses for robberies. He also conducted reconnaissance, drove during operations, and helped transport stolen goods.
On 31 January, a robbery case was filed in Keraniganj Model Police Station, accusing Alamin of looting Tk71 lakh from two gold traders, Nahid and Khokon, posing as a RAB member.
On 25 May last year, he was arrested by RAB in a robbery case and later released on bail.
According to RAB, He currently faces eight cases, including robbery, theft, and arms charges, filed with police stations in Khilgaon, Keraniganj, Mugda, Tangail Sadar, and Siddhirganj in Narayanganj.
