A murder case has been filed over the killing of top-listed criminal Khandaker Naim Ahmed alias Titon in the New Market area of Dhaka.
The case was lodged this morning (29 April) at New Market Police Station by Titon’s elder brother Khandaker Saeed Akhtar Ripon.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ayub confirmed the matter, stating that eight to nine unidentified individuals have been named as accused in the case. Police have already launched operations to identify and arrest those involved.
According to police, the incident took place around 7:45pm yesterday (28 April) in front of Shahnewaz Student Dormitory near the banyan tree area of University of Dhaka. Assailants opened fire indiscriminately at Titon, shooting him at close range. He collapsed on the spot and died instantly.
The 51-year-old Titon was ranked second on the government’s list of 23 top criminals declared in 2001. After serving a long prison term, he was released on bail last August. Just a few months after his release, this dramatic, film-style murder has once again stirred the underworld in Dhaka.
Cattle market dispute may have led to killing of Titon
According to family members, a dispute over the lease of the Bosila cattle market may have been behind the killing of top-listed criminal Khandaker Naim Ahmed alias Titon.
Titon’s elder brother, Khandakar Sayeed Akhtar Ripon, told journalists that Titon had a conflict with another criminal, known as Picchi Helal, over control of the cattle market in Mohammadpur.
“He mentioned during our last meeting that there was a minor dispute with Picchi Helal over the Bosila cattle market,” Ripon said, adding that Titon had been hopeful the issue would be resolved.
Ripon also ruled out any serious conflict between Titon and his brother-in-law Sanzidul Islam Emon, another criminal figure, saying there was no “killing-level” dispute between them.
“I have informed police of everything. I only want justice,” he added.
Police, however, said Emon had previously been linked to the killing of another criminal figure, Tariuqe Saif Mamun, in Old Dhaka last year, and investigators are examining whether Titon’s murder was part of a broader underworld rivalry.
