Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced three months of government assistance for farmers affected by heavy rainfall in the country’s northeastern region.
He made the announcement today (29 April) while responding to a supplementary question from lawmaker Kalim Uddin Ahmed during the 24th sitting of the first session of the 13th Parliament. The session was chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
The prime minister said district administrations have already been given special instructions to support affected farmers in Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, and Sunamganj.
He noted that after receiving weather forecasts three days earlier, he had directed local authorities to take advance precautions and preparedness measures. Farmers whose crops have been damaged by the rains will be properly identified, and the relevant ministries have been instructed to provide them with necessary support for the next three months.
Tarique Rahman also said that he had spoken with the disaster management minister this morning, before attending the Parliamentary session, to determine necessary steps to tackle the crisis.
He emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that no affected farmer is left without assistance. Relief and rehabilitation efforts will be strengthened quickly in the hardest-hit areas, particularly in Mymensingh and the other two districts.
Field-level administration officials will prepare lists of affected farmers to ensure uninterrupted delivery of government support over the next three months, the prime minister added.
However, he did not specify what type of assistance would be provided to the affected farmers.
