Chattogram Metropolitan City has once again been hit by acute waterlogging following a spell of light rain causing significant disruption in traffic movement and affecting residents, office-goers, drivers, and pedestrians of the city.
The downpour, which began around 10:30am today (28 April), left several key roads and low-lying areas submerged in knee to waist-deep water.
The situation was particularly dire in the Probortok More area, where within just an hour of rainfall, streets were reportedly inundated with chest-deep water.
Other areas including Probotok More, Rahmatganj, Katalganj, Chawkbazar, and Muradpur have also been affected.
Even light rainfall continues to submerge major roads, severely disrupting daily life for the residents.
Md Anis Jamal, a local resident, complained, “Water-logged streets have made walking extremely difficult, while rickshaw pullers are taking advantage of the situation by charging inflated fares, demanding Tk50 to Tk60 for trips that usually cost Tk30.”
Sources indicate that ongoing drainage improvement works in the Probotok area are contributing to the problem, as disruptions to the drainage system are preventing water from receding quickly.
Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, chief conservancy officer of Chattogram City Corporation, stated that temporary resistance to water flow caused by a waterlogging mitigation project being implemented by the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) near Probortok.
The repeated waterlogging incidents have raised fresh concerns over the effectiveness of ongoing projects and the overall drainage infrastructure, with residents calling for urgent and lasting solutions to solve the problem.
