A media convention jointly organised by the Editors’ Council and the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (Noab) began this morning (17 January) in Dhaka, protesting recent incidents of mob violence and what they described as attacks on democratic values and freedom of expression.
The programme got underway at around 10am with the playing of the national anthem, followed by the screening of a documentary on media freedom.
According to the organisers, Bangladesh has recently witnessed a series of organised incidents of violence, including mob attacks, which they described as unprecedented assaults on freedom of expression and democratic principles.
The convention aims to register a united protest against such incidents and to reaffirm support for independent, responsible and courageous journalism.
It will also focus on safeguarding a democratic media environment, ensuring the safety of journalists, and upholding the professional dignity and rights of media workers.
