The Coast Guard detained eight suspected smugglers and seized 1,650 litres of furnace oil along with an oil tanker during an operation on the Karnaphuli River last night (24 April).
Confirming the incident, Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Suzan said a special drive was conducted at around 9pm near Bridge Ghat under Karnaphuli Police Station following a tip-off.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel intercepted the oil tanker Kingfisher-5 while furnace oil was allegedly being transferred illegally to a sampan boat for stockpiling.
Authorities seized the oil consignment at the scene and detained eight people suspected of involvement in the activity.
Legal proceedings against the detainees are underway, while the seized oil and vessel remain in custody.
The Coast Guard said such drives would continue to prevent illegal stockpiling and artificial supply shortages.
