A deputy director of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital was stabbed by unidentified assailants in the capital today (20 April), police said.
The victim, Dr Ahmed Hossain, 50, was attacked around 3:30pm in an alley behind the old BRAC University campus in the capital’s Mohakhali area.
Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan division) Tanvir Ahmed said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
Director of the hospital Dr Mostafa Aziz Sumon said the incident occurred when Dr Ahmed was returning home after office hours. Two to three unidentified individuals with covered faces attacked him and stabbed him in the right hand and back before fleeing the scene, he said.
Locals rescued the injured doctor after hearing his screams and took him to the cancer hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment, the hospital director added.
In the evening, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain and State Minister Dr MA Muhit visited the injured doctor at the hospital.
