Two people were killed, and at least three others were injured when a pickup van rammed into a parked truck on the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway today (17 April).
The accident occurred around 6:30am in the Bittipara area of Kushtia Sadar Upazila.
The deceased were identified as Sifayet, 35, and Bikash, 45, both residents of Narail. According to police, Sifayet died on the spot, while Bikash succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Three horses being transported in the pickup van also died in the collision.
According to police and local sources, the pickup was heading towards Narail when it hit the rear of the truck parked on the roadside. The impact left the pickup van mangled, leaving the passengers and driver critically injured.
Locals rescued the victims and rushed them to Kushtia General Hospital, where the condition of some is reported to be critical.
Abu Obayed, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Highway Police Station, said that the bodies have been kept at the morgue for autopsy, and the injured are under treatment.
“The involved vehicles have been seized, and legal procedures are currently underway,” he added.
Traffic movement on the highway was briefly disrupted following the accident, but returned to normal after police intervention.
