The body of a Bangladeshi man shot dead by members of the Khasia community near the Sylhet border four days ago has yet to be returned by India’s Border Security Force (BSF), police said.
Officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station Shafiqul Islam said the incident took place on Wednesday (1 April), when the man was killed after crossing into India.
The OC stated that the deceased, Saddam Hossain, 38, and three companions had reportedly entered India through an illegal route along the border.
The group had gone approximately 600 yards inside India near Pillar 1247 to collect betel nuts when Khasia plantation owners opened fire, killing Saddam on the spot.
One of his companions, Farhad Mia, was injured and later brought back to Bangladesh. The other two companions were Abu Bakkar, 30, and Jafir Mia, 28, he added.
Shafiqul said a flag meeting has already been held between the BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the matter.
Abul Kalam, commander of Utma BGB Camp, told TBS that the victim’s family has been advised to file a general diary at the local police station, while discussions with the BSF continue to secure the return of the body.
