Rail communication with Sylhet remained suspended for nearly three hours after a fire broke out on a train in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar early today (31 March).
The incident occurred at around 6am when the engine of the Dhaka-bound Upobon Express caught fire near Purba Kalipur village in the Shamshernagar area as the train was travelling from Dhaka to Sylhet.
According to railway sources, the fire originated after lubricating oil leaked from the engine and ignited while the train was in motion. The blaze quickly spread through the engine, forcing authorities to halt the train immediately.
Panic spread among passengers, though no casualties were reported.
The incident took place between Bhanugach and Shamshernagar railway stations, leaving rail communication with Sylhet disrupted for hours.
Kulaura Station Master Roman Ahmed said a replacement engine was sent from Sylhet to recover the stranded train. The damaged train was later brought to Shamshernagar Railway Station, allowing rail services to resume at about 9am.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka-bound Kalni Express arrived about an hour late due to the disruption.
