Police have sought to keep content creator RS Fahim Chowdhury in jail after his arrest in a murder case filed with Gulshan Police Station over incidents linked to the July movement.
The accused was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka today (30 March).
As the investigating officer of the case was on leave, the officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station submitted an application seeking to keep him in custody. A hearing on the matter is scheduled to be held at the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jeshita Islam.
Public prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.
Fahim was detained yesterday afternoon (29 March) from the Mirpur Zoo area by locals and a group of students, who later handed him over to Shah Ali Police Station police. He was subsequently transferred to Gulshan Police Station.
According to the case statement, on 19 July, during the anti-discrimination movement, thousands of students and civilians were staging a procession in front of Subastu Market in Shahjadpur, Gulshan. It alleges that, under instructions from top leaders of the then government and ruling party, activists of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies, along with members of law enforcement agencies, opened indiscriminate fire on the protesters.
During the incident, victim Md Imran, 30, who was returning home from work, joined the protesters and chanted slogans in solidarity. He was seriously injured by gunfire from unidentified assailants. He was later taken to United Hospital, where he died at 7:05pm the same day while undergoing treatment.
The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station in April 2025.
