A Rohingya teenager lost his leg in a landmine explosion at the Ukhiya border in Cox’s Bazar today (29 March), according to border officials.
The incident occurred around 1pm at the zero line of the Naf River in the Balukhali border area of Palongkhali union in Ukhiya upazila.
The injured, Abdul Hakim, 15, son of Mohammad Ibrahim, is a resident of Block-A of Rohingya Camp No 19 in Ukhiya.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Ukhiya 64 Battalion, confirmed the incident citing local reports.
“While Abdul Hakim was coming ashore after catching fish in the Naf River, a sudden loud explosion occurred. He was seriously injured in the blast. His right ankle was severed, and various parts of his body sustained severe wounds,” he said.
He added that locals rescued the teenager and took him to the MSF Hospital in Kutupalong, from where he was later referred to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
Earlier, on Thursday (26 March) afternoon, another Rohingya youth, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, 25, lost his leg in a similar landmine explosion at the zero line of the Naf River in the Anjumanpara border area of the same union.
Shahidul is the son of Chan Miah and a resident of Block F-5 of Rohingya Camp No 16 in Ukhiya.
