Teacher and economist Anu Muhammad has raised questions over the detention of Shahriar Kabir, former president of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, for months in what he described as a false murder case.
In a Facebook post yesterday (27 March), he urged the government to immediately release Shahriar Kabir and all those detained under “false charges” or without trial.
In his post, Anu Muhammad asked, “Why Shahriar Kabir, the author of several remarkable books including “Oder Janiye Dao”, “Nuliachharir Sonar Pahar”, and one of the organisers of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee has been detained for months in a false murder case.”
He also questioned the reason why Shahriar is being denied bail.
In the Facebook post, he further questioned if Shahriar’s real “crime” in the eyes of the “Jamaat-backed interim government” was that he had persistently worked for the trial of war criminals.
“I can find no other reason,” Anu Muhammad added.
He also urged the elected government not to carry the disgrace of the interim government and said, “Immediately release Shahriar Kabir and all those who have been detained under false charges or without trial.”
“To demand the release of people unjustly imprisoned in false cases does not require agreeing with their political views,” added Anu Muhammad.
