Police in Sunamganj have arrested two people and filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act after slogans of “Joy Bangla” and “Joy Bangabandhu” were chanted during a tribute at a memorial on Independence Day.
The case was filed last night (26 March), naming more than 50 people, including 27 pro-Awami League lawyers.
The arrestees are Monish Kanti Dey Mintu, former VP of Sunamganj Government College, and Shamim Ahmed, a member of the Awami Ainjeebi Parishad. Both are lawyers.
They were detained by the detective branch yesterday evening, confirmed Sunamganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Sanjoy Sarkar.
The case was filed by Sub-Inspector Anurul Haque of Sunamganj Sadar Police Station.
According to the case statement, the accused took out a procession, chanted slogans, and placed flowers at the memorial under the banner of Bangabandhu Awami Ainjeebi Parishad on the morning of Independence Day.
Mintu is a former municipal councillor and former Chhatra League leader, while Shamim Ahmed is also a former Chhatra League leader.
Earlier that morning, leaders and activists of the Awami Ainjeebi Parishad held a procession in the Sunamganj Collectorate area and later paid tribute at the Shaheed Minar in the court premises.
Confirming the case, Sunamganj Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain said the organisation’s activities are legally banned and that photos and videos of the procession were shared on Facebook, leading to the case.
According to sources, around 23 to 30 lawyers, including some district Awami League leaders, took part in the programme and chanted various slogans. Photos and videos of the procession later spread on Facebook.
