A total of 1,455 inmates at Jashore Central Jail were treated to a special feast and daylong cultural programmes on Independence Day, as authorities arranged enhanced meals and recreational activities to mark the occasion.
The initiative, held to observe Independence Day, featured significantly improved meals compared to the regular prison menu, along with cultural and sports events for inmates.
Prisoners expressed satisfaction at receiving better-quality food on a national occasion.
According to prison officials, the jail currently houses 1,455 inmates, including 164 death row convicts. Special meals were arranged for all inmates, beginning with breakfast of payesh and puffed rice. Lunch included polao, beef or mutton, roasted chicken, salad, soft drinks, sweets, and betel leaf with areca nut. Dinner was set to feature plain rice, fried rui fish, and potato curry.
In addition to the meals, inmates took part in cultural programmes and sports activities throughout the day, providing a break from routine confinement. A separate feast was also arranged for prison officials and staff in line with the Department of Prisons’ prescribed menu.
Jailer Abid Ahmed said the initiative reflected efforts to improve inmate welfare. “On regular days, each inmate receives around 50 grams of meat. On Independence Day, it exceeded 300 grams per person,” he said, adding that inmates welcomed the initiative and expressed satisfaction with the improved meals.
He also noted that the prison environment remains orderly and well-managed, and that authorities are working to ensure a more humane atmosphere for inmates.
Meanwhile, improved meals were also served at the Jashore Juvenile Development Centre and two children’s homes in the district as part of the Independence Day observance.
