Fuel shortages have intensified across Faridpur, with petrol pumps struggling to meet demand as supplies from depots fall to nearly half of daily requirements.
As a result, petrol and octane are not readily available at most filling stations in the district. Long queues have formed in front of several pumps, yet many customers are returning without fuel.
President of the Faridpur Petrol Pump Owners’ Association, Wahid Mia, said the district requires at least 250,000 litres of fuel per day.
“Currently, depots are supplying only half of the demand, putting us in a critical situation,” he said.
According to him, Faridpur has a total of 40 petrol pumps, and the ongoing supply shortfall over the past several days has already exhausted fuel stocks at most outlets, raising concerns that many pumps may be forced to shut down if the situation persists.
A visit to several filling stations by this correspondent today (25 March) found supplies significantly lower than demand, preventing pump operators from serving customers adequately. Many vehicles were seen leaving without refuelling.
To manage the crisis, several pumps have imposed limits on fuel sales. In many cases, customers are allowed to purchase fuel worth no more than Tk100.
At Faridpur Filling Station and Pragati Filling Station, motorcycle riders were seen receiving petrol in small quantities, typically capped at Tk100. This has forced riders to wait in long queues for minimal fuel.
Gautam, a local motorcycle rider, said he has been struggling with the shortage for the past two to three days. “At some pumps, we get fuel worth Tk100, and at others a maximum of Tk200,” he said.
