Khagrachhari, a hill-surrounded district, is set to welcome a surge of tourists during the extended Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. With its lush green hills, winding roads, crystal-clear waterfalls and scenic lakes, the district has become one of the most attractive destinations for nature lovers at this time. Many travellers are choosing Khagrachhari to enjoy a unique experience at a relatively low cost with family or friends.
The district administration said all preparations have already been completed to welcome tourists on the occasion of Eid. In addition to strengthening cleanliness at major tourist spots, security measures have also been increased. Authorities concerned said surveillance by law enforcement agencies has been intensified to manage the additional crowd.
Among the district’s most popular tourist attractions is Alutila Tourist Centre. Located about 7 kilometres from the town, the site features a naturally formed long tunnel, which is a major attraction for visitors. Walking through the dark tunnel and emerging from the other end offers a thrilling experience, while the illuminated view of the town during sunset creates a mesmerising scene.
A short distance from Alutila lies Risang Waterfall, which can be reached by crossing hilly paths. The cool, clear water of the waterfall and the natural surroundings help relieve travellers’ fatigue. Near the town, New Zealand Para is especially known for its sunset views, offering a combined experience of rolling hills and the lifestyle of local communities.
In addition, Mayabini Lake has become a popular recreational spot among tourists. Boating on the lake’s clear waters, along with the surrounding green hills and tranquil environment, attracts visitors. Matai Pukhiri, located on a hilltop in Mahalchhari upazila, is known as a sacred site to locals and sees visitors throughout the year.
For adventure enthusiasts, Toiduchhara Waterfall offers a more challenging experience, requiring travel through rugged hill terrain. Meanwhile, the District Council Horticulture Park at the Zero Mile area provides facilities such as a hanging bridge, lake, watchtower and kids’ zone, making it suitable for family outings.
Transport to Khagrachhari is relatively easy, with direct bus services available from Dhaka. Bus fares, both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned, generally range between Tk750 and Tk1,700. For accommodation, there are options including tourist motels and hotels such as Hotel Gairing and Arannya Bilash, along with various resorts catering to different budgets.
However, due to the expected surge of visitors during Eid, authorities have advised tourists to book hotels and transport in advance. Visitors have also been urged to exercise caution on slippery rocks near waterfalls and to remain respectful of local culture and the environment.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Md Anwar Sadat told TBS that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety and comfort of tourists.
