A two-and-a-half-year-old child has been killed in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia after being strangled with a scarf, prompting the detention of her aunt.
The incident took place yesterday (18 March) in South Darer Para village under Sadar union of the upazila, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station, Arifur Rahman, confirmed to The Business Standard.
The deceased was identified as Afia, daughter of Shahin Sardar of the same area, the OC said.
According to police and local sources, Afia was found hanging from a tree in a nearby mahogany garden in the evening, with a scarf wrapped around her neck.
Locals rescued her and rushed her to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
Following the incident, the child’s father alleged that Afia’s aunt, Kalpana Akter, 20, was involved in the killing.
Later, during questioning by locals, Kalpana reportedly confessed to strangling the child with a scarf.
Upon receiving the information, Daulatpur police recovered the body and detained the accused.
OC Arifur said that Kalpana has been detained in connection with the murder and that legal proceedings are underway.
“The incident is being taken seriously, and legal proceedings are underway,” he added.
