International Women’s Day will be observed in Bangladesh tomorrow (8 March), as elsewhere across the globe, celebrating women’s achievements, raising awareness against bias and calling for action toward equality.
The United Nations has been observing the day as International Women’s Day since 1975. The theme for this year is “Give to Gain”.
“Give to Gain emphasises the power of reciprocity and support. When people, organisations and communities give generously, opportunities and support for women increase,” the organisation said.
“Giving is not a subtraction; it is intentional multiplication. When women thrive, we all rise,” it added.
International Women’s Day is observed every year on 8 March to celebrate the women’s movement and their struggle for equality.
The day will be marked worldwide through various programmes highlighting the need for action – not just discussion – to uphold women’s rights and dignity, while celebrating women’s economic, political and social achievements.
In Bangladesh, programmes have been taken at the national level under the auspices of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to mark the day. Different offices and organisations have also undertaken initiatives to observe the occasion.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages on the eve of the day, greeting women across the world.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended warm greetings and congratulations to women worldwide.
He said the government aims to build a Bangladesh where men and women will enjoy equal rights, stressing the need to ensure gender equality and equal opportunities for all citizens.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private television channels will air special programmes, while newspapers will publish supplements highlighting the significance of the day.
