The chair of the Social Welfare Department and an assistant professor at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia was stabbed to death allegedly by an employee on campus today (4 March).
The victim, Asma Sadia Runa, was inside her office at the Theology and Islamic Studies building when Fazlur Rahman, an employee of the Political Science Department, entered the room and allegedly stabbed her, critically injuring her, university sources told The Business Standard.
Resident Medical Officer of Kushtia General Hospital Dr Imam Hossain declared Runa dead when she was taken to the hospital in the afternoon.
According to university sources, a group of students entered the chairman’s office at the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies and found Runa lying in a pool of blood.
They also saw Fazlur Rahman inside the room with severe injuries in an apparent suicide attempt.
Members of the university’s proctorial body and police from Islamic University Police Station rushed to the scene after being informed and recovered both the teacher and the employee.
They were first taken to the IU central medical centre and later to Kushtia General Hospital as their conditions deteriorated.
“The exact motive of the murder is not known yet. We are looking into the matter,” IU Proctor Prof M Shahinuzzaman told UNB.
Fazlur Rahman is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
