Five people were killed in a head-on collision between a gas cylinder-laden truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Kushtia today (21 February).
The accident occurred on the town’s bypass road in front of Kushtia Store.
Chourhash Highway Police Inspector Joydeb told The Business Standard that the truck and the CNG involved in the accident have been seized, while the truck driver fled the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, a gas cylinder-laden truck coming from the opposite direction suddenly lost control and collided head-on with the passenger-carrying CNG, leaving the auto-rickshaw completely mangled. Upon receiving information, police and fire service personnel rushed to the scene for rescue operations.
Three people died on the spot, while two others with critical injuries were taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where they later succumbed to injuries.
Preliminary reports indicate that the deceased include the driver of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw and four passengers.
Legal proceedings in connection with the incident are currently underway, as locals have demanded effective measures to curb the reckless movement of heavy vehicles on the bypass road.
