Who has prevented fugitive accused from returning to the country? They should come back and face trial instead of remaining abroad, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has said.
“Those who have fled, those who are absconding or wanted should return to the country. The law wants them back. They are capable of returning home and facing their sentences,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while responding to journalists after an anti-terrorism rally against planned acts of terrorism across the country at Kunderbazar in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj this evening (8 November).
Rabiul said the fall of what he described as a fascist government through the July Uprising had brought 17 years of alleged misdeeds, misrule, mass killings and abuse of power to light, with those responsible now facing trial.
Several cases had already resulted in verdicts, while others remained under trial, he added.
“Those who fled did so in the face of the mass movement and uprising. The allegations against them, their party and its leaders are still under trial in some courts, while verdicts have already been delivered in others. They are not above the law,” he said.
The minister also said the government had plans to overhaul the country’s infrastructure to accelerate development.
He said a policy decision had been taken to widen all upazila-level roads under the Roads and Highways Department to 18 feet.
Earlier in the afternoon, Rabiul formally inaugurated construction of the Kunderbazar Bridge over the Taltala-Dahuri Canal on the Muktarpur-Chanbari Road in Kunderbazar. He also laid the foundation stones at both ends of the bridge.
