A truck driver and his helper were killed after their vehicle collided with a covered van on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sitakunda, Chattogram, early today (7 November).
The accident occurred around 6:30am in the Barua Para area of Panchila in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as truck driver Md Saleh Ahmed Selim, 46, and his helper Md Sohrab, 35. Both were residents of Rangpur district.
According to Kumira Highway Police Outpost, the truck was carrying goods from Rangpur to Chattogram when it rammed into the rear of a covered van travelling ahead in the same lane.
The impact left the truck’s front cabin badly mangled, trapping the driver and his helper inside.
On receiving information, members of Kumira Highway Police Outpost and Sitakunda Fire Service rushed to the scene and rescued the two with the help of local residents.
They were taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Asked about the cause of the accident, Kumira Highway Police Outpost In-Charge Mohammad Ziauddin told The Business Standard that the covered van had allegedly applied sudden brakes without giving any signal while travelling in the same lane, causing the truck behind it to lose control and hit the vehicle.
However, the actual cause of the accident would be confirmed after a police investigation, he added.
Police seized both the truck and the covered van following the accident. The bodies were taken into police custody after inquest reports were prepared.
Legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident, while traffic on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway remained normal after the accident, highway police said.
