Johnny Depp stepped out as Ebenezer Scrooge recently at New York City’s Bryant Park Winter Village.
The surprise appearance was to promote his new film, Ebenezer. Staying in character, he pushed over a Christmas tree and caused other mischief.
Depp, 63, was dressed in Victorian clothes, along with a black top hat, a matching coat and a cane. He stayed in character even as he walked, portraying a hunched posture. His usual jet-black hair was replaced with messy silver strands.
He told the press that Ebenezer “just sort of arrived in a weird way.”
“It’s kind of like the first time you put the wardrobe on, and you feel that, like with any character, that becomes your kind of suit of armour,” he told People.
Ebenezer is the latest take on Charles Dickens’ ghost story A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843.
The film’s description calls Depp’s Scrooge “deliciously unpleasant.” On Christmas Eve, he faces his past, present, and future on a supernatural journey that will decide his fate.
The story includes Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit, and the Ghosts of Christmas.
The cast includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, Robert Strange, Daisy Ridley and Sir Ian McKellen. Arthur Conti, Sam Claflin, Ellie Bamber, Nicholas Day, Charlie Murphy and Henry Lloyd-Hughes also appear.
The film is due in a few weeks.
