Several factories in the Savar and Ashulia industrial areas of Dhaka observed work stoppages today (5 November) amid ongoing worker unrest over demands for an increase in the garment sector’s minimum wage.
Workers reported to their factories in the morning but refused to work, opting instead to observe work stoppages.
Meanwhile, authorities at several factories in Jamgora, Nishchintapur and Narsinghpur along the Baipail-Abdullahpur road in Ashulia declared general holidays as workers refused to work and amid security concerns.
The overall situation across the industrial belt remained tense, with a heavy security presence to prevent any untoward incidents.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other law enforcement agencies were seen maintaining heightened security at various points, including Hemayetpur, Ulail, Padmar Mor and different locations along the Baipail-Abdullahpur road.
No untoward incidents had been reported in the industrial areas as of 9am, according to reports from the ground.
