A voter from Kushtia-3 (Sadar) has urged the chief election commissioner to investigate alleged discrepancies, concealment of information and false declarations in the election affidavit and income tax returns of MP Mufti Amir Hamza, seeking cancellation of his candidature if the allegations are substantiated.
Sirajul Islam submitted a written application to the Election Commission yesterday (3 November), raising questions about the lawmaker’s bank accounts, cash holdings, movable and immovable assets, his wife’s assets, rental income, vehicle valuation, family expenditure and election expenses.
The complainant alleged that information in Amir Hamza’s election affidavit does not match his income tax returns and other documents.
According to the application, Hamza’s income tax return shows a zero bank balance, although he allegedly had a substantial amount of money in his bank account during the relevant period.
The complainant also claimed that the cash declared in the election affidavit differs from the amount shown in the tax return.
Sirajul further questioned whether the MP’s wife’s income tax information, agricultural and other assets in her name, and a residential plot owned by Hamza in Kushtia city had been properly disclosed.
The application also alleges inconsistencies in the valuation of the MP’s vehicle, rental income, household expenses and election campaign expenditure.
Questions were raised about the amount of gold and other assets declared in the election affidavit, with the complainant seeking verification of the relevant documents.
Sirajul requested a formal and impartial investigation under Section 91(5) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972.
He also sought legal action under Section 91(2), including declaring the elected candidate’s election invalid and cancelling the election, if the allegations are substantiated.
The application reportedly includes copies of Hamza’s election affidavit, income tax returns, documents relating to his wife’s income tax, election expenditure statements, vehicle registration papers and property documents.
Sirajul said he had filed the complaint as a voter and concerned citizen of Kushtia-3.
“There are several inconsistencies in Amir Hamza’s election affidavit. These details should be made public, and the allegations should be properly investigated,” he said.
Attempts were made several times to contact Kushtia-3 MP Mufti Amir Hamza by phone for his comment. However, he did not answer, and his response could not be obtained.
