The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian national at the Bhomra immigration checkpoint in Satkhira with gold paste worth Tk1.55 crore concealed inside his rectum.
The man, Jahir Shah Golam Hossain, 43, son of Golam Hossain Sherkhan and a resident of Hita Camp in Mumbai, was detained around 9am yesterday (2 November) on suspicion of attempting to smuggle gold from Bangladesh to India without paying customs duties and taxes, according to BGB.
He initially denied carrying gold, but a medical examination later revealed two packets of gold paste concealed inside his body. The packets were subsequently recovered, weighing a total of 813.5 grammes.
Lt Col Ashikur Rahman, commander of BGB-33 Satkhira, confirmed the incident.
He said the seized gold would be deposited in the government treasury and legal proceedings against the Indian national were under way.
