Leaders and activists of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal detained a former leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League from Jagannath Hall today (1 November) and handed him over to police.
The detainee was identified as Arko Roy, former social services secretary of Dhaka University Chhatra League.
He was detained inside the hall in the afternoon and handed over to Shahbagh Police Station in the evening, Dhaka University Proctor Associate Professor Israfil Ratan confirmed to The Business Standard.
“I have heard that students detained a former leader of Chhatra League at the hall, and police have taken him into custody,” he said.
Witnesses said Chhatra Dal activists detained Arko inside the hall before handing him over to police in the presence of the hall administration and the university’s proctorial team.
Dhrubo Roy, a member of the convening committee of Jagannath Hall Chhatra Dal, said Arko had been secretly staying at the hall at night for a long time.
The activists detained him after spotting him there, he said.
Dhrubo also alleged that Arko might have been involved in the recent cocktail explosion in front of Jagannath Hall.
Jagannath Hall Provost Debashish Pal said no former Chhatra League office-bearer had an allocated seat at the hall, as all such allocations had already been cancelled.
“We have learned that he used to visit the hall occasionally. Students detained him after spotting him today and handed him over to police,” he said.
The provost added that the hall administration would investigate whether anyone else was staying there illegally.
