Police have recovered three crude bomb-like objects from the Bypail-Abdullahpur road in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka city, amid readymade garment workers’ protests demanding a wage hike.
Ashulia Industrial Police-1 personnel recovered the objects from beside New Age Garments factory in the Nischintapur area around noon today (31 October), said Additional Superintendent of Police Syed Faisal Islam.
Shortly before the recovery, workers of New Age Garments came out of the factory after it announced a holiday and began throwing bricks and stones at other factories, triggering clashes and chases with police.
At least 10 officers and members of the industrial police were injured during the clashes. It was not immediately known whether any workers were injured.
Speaking to the media, Faisal said police suspected that workers were being misguided into engaging in such activities.
“We urge you [workers] not to get involved in any disorder. You can continue your protests peacefully, and we support your legitimate demands. However, if anyone tries to create disorder or cause public suffering in violation of the law, we will take appropriate legal action against them,” said the police official.
He added that additional police personnel had been deployed at various points across the industrial area.
