Nuruzzaman Mintu, the eldest son of Natore-4 BNP lawmaker Abdul Aziz, has been placed on a three-day remand for questioning over the death of a Chhatra Dal leader who died 12 days after being attacked with sharp weapons in Natore.
Natore Chief Judicial Magistrate Court Judge Mehedi Hasan today (27 October) granted a three-day remand after police produced Nuruzzaman and sought a 10-day remand.
Earlier, police took him into custody from his rented home in the Bazarpara area of Gurudaspur last night. He was formally shown arrested after questioning this afternoon.
Shakil Islam, member secretary of the Gurudaspur municipal unit of Chhatra Dal, died at Bangladesh Medical University around 8:15pm on Monday while undergoing treatment.
Nuruzzaman is a joint convener of the Gurudaspur upazila unit of Jubo Dal.
Shakil was attacked by assailants wielding sharp weapons around 10:30pm on 14 October while returning from Chanchkoir market. Locals rescued him and took him to the upazila health complex. He was later transferred to Rajshahi and then to Bangladesh Medical University in Dhaka.
Following the attack, Shakil’s father, Robiul Karim, filed a case with Gurudaspur Police Station on 19 October against eight to 10 unidentified people.
Several Chhatra Dal sources said the MP’s two sons – Nuruzzaman and Mahmuduzzaman – had separate groups of followers and tensions existed between the camps. Shakil was a follower of the MP’s younger son, Mahmuduzzaman, a former joint general secretary of the Gurudaspur upazila BNP.
On 20 April, Shakil had posted on Facebook that he feared for his life, alleging that an influential person was contacting various groups to arrange his killing. He said he had informed the officer-in-charge of the police station and filed a general diary naming those involved.
DB Inspector Nazrul Islam said the investigation was considering all aspects but declined to disclose further details.
Abdul Aziz visited Shakil’s home in Kacharipara near Gurudaspur upazila headquarters today and consoled his family, pledging a fair investigation and justice for the victim.
