Unlike before, when each superhero movie played a part in the wider storytelling of an interconnected universe, James Gunn’s doesn’t.
However, his vision for the DCU drew pushback from some fans, especially over what they saw as DC’s co-head not having built a big crossover event movie.
Addressing to them, he took to Threads and wrote, “DCU is just an alternate universe; we can enter at any location or time and tell THAT story. I dislike the idea that individual stories aren’t meaningful unless they lead to something else.”
To drive his point home, Gunn brought up Star Wars.
“People not understanding this is strange to me, because Star Wars has essentially been doing this for 50 years across movies, shows, games and books, admittedly without the tonal variety.”
To cap off his argument, Gunn said the movies in the DCU should be enjoyed for their own sake, not as cogs in the wider storytelling machine building toward a key superhero movie featuring a score of superheroes.
“But that doesn’t mean those other stories only exist to set up what’s happening there. I would love people to be seeing Clayface because it’s a great, fun horror movie unto itself, not because of where else Clayface will show up three movies from now.”
Clayface is running in theatres.
