Following Jack Antonoff’s split with Margaret Qualley, the singer admitted that he is not planning to stop singing the love songs he wrote for his ex-wife because it gave him a new meaning.
Speaking to Guardian about performing the songs, the 42-year-old singer and producer revealed it has been “really beautiful” despite the end of their relationship.
As Jack is currently touring, he shared, “Songs which I wrote recently, I obviously was really worried about this specific thing.”
He continued, “I sat long and hard with it and thought, ‘If I change the setlist …’ and in my gut there was a unanimous jury that said, ‘No, this is the deal. The deal I’ve made with my audience is that I’m going to tell you honestly how I feel and I’m going to risk at any moment having to stand behind it for f****** ever.’ ”
The Grammy-winning producer added that the songs can connect with people who have experienced heartbreak, “Anyone could relate to the terrible sadness and pain, but there’s a great power to it also.”
Jack said sharing these songs with fans has become a meaningful experience. “It’s actually been really beautiful.”
Furthermore, Jack expressed his thoughts on his recent breakup noting that he does not want to change how he feels about the past.
“I don’t rewrite the past, I have no shame about the things I’ve said,” the producer told the outlet.
He explained, “My life has been dedicated to making it impossible for me to rewrite the past, because I’m standing there, singing about how I felt during the good times, so when the bad times hit I can’t look myself in the mirror and pretend that those times didn’t exist.”
“I would rather live through something publicly than even escape it privately,” added Jack.
It is pertinent to mention that this interview marks Jack’s first public comments about their split.
Jack and Margaret separated in July after nearly three years of marriage.
