Britney Spears — a force of nature — stunned the music industry when she dropped her music video, I’m a Slave 4 U.
However, when she recorded the music video, she was just 19.
Now, Brian Friedman — a choreographer — who helped young Spears choreograph her dance, reflected on how skilful the pop icon was in the music video.
“Britney in 2001 was unstoppable,” Friedman told People, who, in addition to I’m a Slave 4 U, collaborated with Spears on a number of music videos.
He shared, “She was the best of the best. She was on top of the world, which is crazy to think that. She was 19 years old. She was just a baby at that time.”
Interestingly, Friedman said he and his co-choreographer, Wade Robson, designed the dance moves as if Spears improvised them, rather than having her choreographers direct her.
“With me, she didn’t really choreograph, but she knew how to make things look her own,” he told People.
“And I think the gift of a great choreographer is when you give choreography to an artist; you choreograph it for them, and you have them in mind,” Friedman added.
“So when they do the work, it should look like them, and it shouldn’t look like they’re trying to be someone else.”
“I think Wade and I both always wanted everything to look like it was her improv or her freestyle,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the I’m Slave 4 U music video marked a turning point for her image, as it showed a mature, sensual side of Spears.
