Food Minister Afroza Khanam has sought technical support from the United States to ensure food safety, test the quality of imported food grains and improve long-term storage facilities in Bangladesh.
The request came during a courtesy call by US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen on the minister at her Secretariat office today (25 October).
They discussed various issues of mutual interest, including strengthening cooperation between the two countries on food security.
The minister sought US experts and technical assistance to test the quality of imported rice and wheat at Chattogram and Mongla ports.
She also highlighted challenges in long-term grain storage due to Bangladesh’s climatic conditions and discussed the scope for US expertise in storage technology and management.
The US ambassador thanked the minister and praised her work, saying the possibility of assistance from US experts in ensuring food safety will be considered.
The two sides also discussed US wheat imports to Bangladesh and expressed satisfaction that shipments were being delivered within the agreed timeframe without any reported problems.
Afroza shared with the ambassador her recent visit to a vessel carrying US-imported wheat at Chattogram Port’s outer anchorage.
The meeting underscored the need to strengthen Bangladesh-US cooperation in food safety, imported grain quality testing and long-term grain storage systems.
