A 41-year-old man was beaten to death on suspicion of child theft at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka last night (21 October), with police detaining a prime suspect in connection with the incident.
The deceased, Alam Sheikh, was from Rupnagar in the capital and was mentally unstable, according to his family.
Confirming the incident today, Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of police for Tejgaon Division, said police had contacted the deceased’s family and would take further legal steps after speaking with them when they arrived.
He also confirmed the detention of the prime suspect but could not immediately disclose the person’s identity.
According to police, Alam Sheikh was seen roaming around the hospital’s children’s ward at around 11pm last night. Attendants of children receiving treatment there allegedly suspected him of being a child thief.
When questioned about his presence at the hospital, he reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, police said.
A group of people then allegedly dragged him downstairs and beat him, leaving him dead at the scene.
Police recovered the body after receiving information through the national emergency helpline 999. His identity was confirmed through fingerprint verification.
The body was sent to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, police said. A case will be filed after members of the deceased’s family arrive.
