An auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested in Cumilla over allegations of raping a woman after a video apparently showing him confessing to the assault went viral on social media.
The accused, Md Ikramul Haq, 37, was arrested around 2:30am today (12 October) from the Juktikhola area of Chauddagram upazila, where he had allegedly gone into hiding after the video circulated.
Special Response Battalion (SRB)-11 CPC-2 Cumilla Acting Company Commander Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Imrul Hasan confirmed the arrest.
He said Ikramul had been handed over to Sadar South Model Police Station for legal action.
According to preliminary investigation and interrogation, the incident occurred around 3:30pm on 10 October in a banana grove beside the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Lalbagh area of Sadar South upazila.
Another auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Rasel, reportedly saw Ikramul leaving the grove and recorded a video in which the accused appeared to admit to the assault.
The video went viral on social media on 10 October, prompting SRB-11 to intensify surveillance to locate the accused and rescue the victim.
Ikramul was subsequently traced and arrested using intelligence and technology, the battalion said.
