A 22-year-old Bangladeshi student was killed and three others were injured in a road accident in Perth, Western Australia, on Thursday morning (8 October).
The deceased, Tasnim Oishi, was a student at Edith Cowan University and had moved to Australia about two months ago for higher education, according to the Bangladesh International Students Association Perth (BISAP).
The crash occurred around 7:45am local time on Indian Ocean Drive in Breton Bay, north of Perth.
The four students were travelling south in a grey BMW when the vehicle reportedly lost control near the Seabird Road intersection, veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Tasnim, who was seated in the front passenger seat beside the driver, died at the scene.
The other three students – two men and a woman – were injured. One of the men was driving the vehicle.
Firefighters and emergency crews rescued the injured students and took them to Royal Perth Hospital. Police said, citing doctors, that their conditions were stable and their injuries were not life-threatening.
Tasnim’s body has been kept at the mortuary of the same hospital.
The section of Indian Ocean Drive was closed in both directions for several hours to facilitate the rescue operation.
Australian police have launched an investigation into the crash and appealed to witnesses who were travelling on the road at the time to provide information.
BISAP expressed deep grief over Tasnim’s death in a statement, offering condolences to her family, friends and classmates and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured students.
