Chattogram’s first dedicated cycle track, described as the country’s first, will be inaugurated tomorrow (9 October) to provide a safer and environmentally friendly mode of transport while helping reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain inspected the track and reviewed preparations for its inauguration today (8 October), a day before the opening.
During the inspection, the mayor visited different sections of the track and discussed the construction quality, opening preparations and facilities for cyclists with officials. He also instructed officials to take necessary measures to ensure the track is safe and user-friendly.
“We are working in a planned manner to build Chattogram as a modern, clean, liveable and environmentally friendly city. The inauguration of Bangladesh’s first cycle track will mark a new chapter in the city’s urban management. It is not just a path for cyclists, but a symbol of our progress towards an environmentally friendly and healthy urban life,” Shahadat said.
The road was developed under the Chattogram City Corporation’s “Chattogram Airport Road Expansion and Other Physical Infrastructure Development” project.
The approximately 2.2-km road has four lanes, with footpaths on both sides and a median island separated by kerbstones. A cycle track has been constructed along a landscaped walkway on one side of the road.
“The initiative has been taken to ensure safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly transportation for city residents and tourists. A separate cycle lane will improve the safety of cyclists while expanding opportunities for environmentally friendly transport,” the mayor said.
Emphasising the need to encourage young people to use bicycles, he said creating a safe environment for cycling would increase bicycle use, reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and encourage healthier lifestyles.
“We will take necessary initiatives in the future to develop Chattogram as a bicycle-friendly city,” he said.
The cycle track will be opened to the public after its formal inauguration tomorrow.
