A court in Naogaon has issued arrest warrants against six people, including a doctor, over the death of a woman following a Caesarean section at an unauthorised private hospital.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Naogaon Sadar No 1 Amli Court passed the order.
The accused are operating physician Fabliha Sadia Shafin, 29, anesthesiologist Md Akheruzzaman Rabbi, 33, Metro Hospital Managing Director Md Ripon Ali, 37, operation theatre in-charge Salma Bibi Nazma, 32, and two suspected brokers- Md Rashedul Islam Hiru, 33, and Md Nahid Babu, 22.
According to the case details, Rahee Muni, a resident of the South Sultanpur area in Naogaon town, went to Naogaon 250-bed General Hospital on 6 April for childbirth.
A broker reportedly persuaded her to undergo a better Caesarean operation and took her to the private Metro Hospital under an agreement for Tk8,000.
Dr Fabliha Sadia Shafin performed the Caesarean section that night.
Relatives alleged that gauze was left inside her abdomen and the incision was stitched.
Her physical condition began deteriorating after the surgery, and her abdomen became abnormally swollen.
As her condition worsened, hospital authorities performed a second surgery the following day and removed gauze from her abdomen.
As her condition did not improve, she was transferred in critical condition to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where she died on April 9.
Following the incident, Naogaon Civil Surgeon Dr Aminul Islam inspected Metro Hospital and confirmed that it was an unregistered hospital.
After reports about the incident were published in various media outlets, the matter came to the court’s attention on 13 April.
The court took cognisance of the case on its own and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct an investigation.
The PBI submitted its investigation report to the court on 22 August.
Following the submission, the court on Wednesday accepted the report and issued arrest warrants against all six accused.
