Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern over the attack on journalists and students at Rajshahi University (RU), calling for an impartial and effective investigation into the incident.
In a press release issued today (5 October), the human rights organisation urged the authorities to identify those involved in the attack and take legal action against them.
According to media reports, at least 10 people, including four journalists, were injured in an attack in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall on the night of 4 October.
Journalists were allegedly attacked and obstructed while collecting news and recording video, with threats also reportedly made afterwards.
ASK said journalists play an important role in ensuring the public’s right to information and that attacks, intimidation and obstruction of journalists threaten their safety and undermine independent journalism and a free media environment.
“Attacking journalists for collecting or publishing information about an incident is in no way acceptable,” the organisation said.
Citing Article 39 of the Constitution, ASK said freedom of thought and conscience, and freedom of speech and the press, are guaranteed in Bangladesh. It also referred to Articles 31 and 32, which provide protection of legal rights, life and personal liberty.
The organisation said the right to freedom of expression and to seek, receive and impart information is also recognised under international human rights frameworks, including Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
ASK also called for appropriate medical treatment and security for the journalists and students injured in the attack.
