The government has honoured 102 distinguished teachers from different levels of education with Tk2 lakh each on World Teachers’ Day.
The teachers received crests, certificates of honour and cash awards at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today (5 October).
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman handed over the awards at the event, organised by the Ministry of Education and chaired by Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon.
According to the published list, the 102 recipients were selected from various categories, including primary, secondary, college, madrasa, technical, general university, medical, agricultural, engineering and specialised universities.
Among those honoured for contributions to university education were late Dhaka University professor Dr Emajuddin Ahmed, posthumously; emeritus professor Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury; Rajshahi University emeritus professor Dr Arun Kumar Basak; and late Chittagong University mathematics professor Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam, posthumously.
For contributions to medical education, former ENT surgeon Professor Dr MA Mazed was honoured posthumously, while Professor Dr Sayeba Akhter was also among the recipients.
In engineering and technical education, former Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Shahjahan was honoured posthumously, along with Dr ABM Harun-ur-Rashid.
Several educators were also recognised in special categories.
They include Md Lutfur Rahman, known as the “one-taka teacher” for providing free education since 1974; Ramani Kanta Bepari of Ramani Kanta Pathshala; and Md Mozammel Hossain Khan, an assistant teacher at Proyas Institute of Special Education, for his contribution to educating children with special needs.
The government said the recipients were selected after scrutiny by separate judging and search committees formed by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Directorate of Primary Education, Directorate of Madrasa and Technical Education, and the University Grants Commission.
