A cargo vessel carrying methanol will set sail tomorrow (5 October) from Bogibeel terminal in India’s Dibrugarh for Pangaon Port in Dhaka, via National Waterway-2 and the India-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR).
India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will flag off the vessel tomorrow morning, according to an official announcement.
The methanol cargo has been produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited.
The voyage will mark the first time since India’s independence that a cargo consignment from Dibrugarh will sail to a foreign port.
The Brahmaputra was historically a major trade route for Assam, connecting the region with markets beyond its borders, while Dibrugarh was one of its important river ports.
The planned voyage marks a revival of that connectivity as India seeks to develop inland waterways as a cheaper, greener and more efficient transport route for the Northeast.
