Customs intelligence officials recovered 80 gold bars weighing a total of 9.34kg from the shoes of two crew members of a flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today (4 October).
According to an NBR press release, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) officials took up positions at the airport following a tip-off and recovered the gold bars, concealed inside the crew members’ shoes, on the runway as Emirates Airlines flight EK0582 arrived from Dubai.
Each gold bar weighed approximately 117 grams. The total weight of the recovered gold is around 9.34kg, with an estimated market value of Tk16.25 crore, says the release.
The NBR said the authorities are investigating the smuggling method, including who was involved, where the gold came from and who was supposed to receive it.
