Police have arrested a grocery shopkeeper for allegedly attempting to rape a four-year-old girl after luring her with the promise of ice cream in Chandina, Cumilla.
Kamruzzaman Sohel, 45, was initially detained by locals in the Indrar Char area of Ward 4 under Chandina municipality and turned over to police last night (2 October).
Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nuruzzaman said a case has been filed over the incident.
“The allegation of an attempted rape of the child is true,” he said, adding that the accused has been arrested and taken to the police station.
According to the child’s father, she went to Sohel’s grocery shop near a vehicle garage in Indrar Char yesterday morning.
She sustained serious injuries to her genital area and returned home crying, he added.
The family informed local community leaders but received no immediate response.
They later called the national emergency service 999, the father said.
Kamruzzaman, a father of three, is the son of the late Shahjahan Mia of Indrar Char village.
The child’s family lives in a rented house in the area, while her father works as a CNG-run autorickshaw driver.
Several locals alleged that Kamruzzaman has previously engaged in similar misconduct with children.
They demanded exemplary punishment if the allegations are proven.
