A 25-year-old man died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) this morning (1 October) after allegedly being pushed from a moving train during a robbery attempt in the capital’s Kurmitola area.
The deceased was identified as Hafizur Rahman, who worked at a resort in Gazipur’s Joydebpur.
His identity was confirmed this afternoon, hours after his death, said Md Habibur Rahman, inspector and in-charge of the DMCH police camp.
He said two passers-by took Hafizur to the hospital around 9:30pm last night (30 September) after finding him critically injured beside the railway tracks behind Kurmitola General Hospital.
They found him bleeding after noticing a crowd gathered near the tracks, he added.
According to witnesses, Hafizur had been attacked by robbers on a moving train bound for Kamalapur. During a scuffle, the attackers pushed him from the train.
He was initially taken to Kurmitola General Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Hafizur’s elder brother, Md Hossain Sheikh, said their family home is at Char Chinguri village in Bagerhat’s Chitalmari upazila. Hafizur’s wife, Mukta Akter, and their child live there.
He said Hafizur had left Gazipur yesterday during his leave to travel home. He usually travelled by train from Joydebpur to Kamalapur before taking a bus from Sayedabad to Bagerhat.
Police informed his family of his death this morning, after which they came to Dhaka and identified the body.
Joynal Abedin, officer-in-charge of Dhaka Railway Police Station in Kamalapur, said the circumstances surrounding Hafizur’s fall remained unclear.
“It has not yet been established whether he was pushed from the train or how he fell,” he said, adding that the incident was being investigated.
No case has been filed so far. Hafizur’s body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
