BNP leader Mofizur Rahman Mamun expelled over ‘unethical, anti-party activities’

Mofizur Rahman Mamun, president of the BNP’s ward 91 unit under Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka North, has been expelled from the party over allegations of unethical and anti-organisational activities.

The BNP announced the decision in a press release yesterday (29 September). The expulsion includes Mamun’s primary membership of the party and all positions he held at different levels.

A BNP leader from Uttara, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Business Standard that allegations of extortion, land grabbing, drug trading and control over scrap, cable TV and internet businesses had been made against Mamun.

The leader also said Mamun was allegedly involved in the killing of Pallabi thana unit Jubo Dal member secretary Golam Kibria, who was shot dead on 17 November. ” However, the allegations have not been independently verified.”

The leader further said he was unaware of the specific incident or allegation that prompted the BNP to expel Mamun.

The expulsion came on the same day as a Prothom Alo investigative report said Mamun leads a group known as the “Mamun Bahini”, which controls extortion, scrap trading, land grabbing and drug trading in parts of Mirpur.

The report, citing police and local sources, said Mamun is currently in Malaysia and runs the group from there.

According to the report, police and local intelligence sources have linked Mamun and his two brothers to allegations involving criminal activities in several areas of Mirpur.
