The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized 48 tonnes of urea fertiliser and arrested three people during a raid over an alleged smuggling attempt in Chattogram’s Mirsharai.
The seizure was made around 1am today (25 September) at Ichakhali Ghat based on a tip-off, according to a press release signed by Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon.
The fertiliser, worth an estimated Tk33.6 lakh, was allegedly being transferred from four trucks to a fishing boat for shipment to Myanmar when Coast Guard personnel intervened, the release stated.
The Coast Guard seized 960 sacks containing a total of 48,000kg of urea fertiliser, along with the four trucks and the fishing boat allegedly used in the smuggling attempt, it added.
The three suspects, along with the seized fertiliser, vehicles and boat, were handed over to the authorities for legal action in the presence of an executive magistrate, the Coast Guard said.
Lt Commander Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue such raids to prevent smuggling.
